This week is the culmination of the Cēsis Art Festival

August 8 at 21 A concert will take place on the stage of Cēsis Castle Park Silent black and white and Shostakovich.

The first part of the evening will feature the First Piano Concerto composed by Dmitry Shostakovich in 1933, characterized by a rich and ingenious use of musical quotes and parodies, starting with Ludwig van Beethoven. Passionate and finally with the song Oh, my dear Augustine. The author himself played the piano solo in the premiere of the concert, but on the evening of August 8, he will be able to hear the interpretation of pianist Reinis Zariņš. The trumpet solo will be performed by Jānis Porietis. “This composition represents all the features of the style that are in Shostakovich’s cinema and theater music, it is one of the most important piano concerts of the 20th century,” Arturs Maskats emphasizes.

In the second part of the evening, the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra will play Baster Kitton’s silent comedy Sherlock the youngest conducted by Andris Poga.
“Andris Poga and I, thinking about this open-air cinema screening, listened to several versions created by the composers especially for this film, and none of them seemed really accurate and witty, lively, unexpected and paradoxical. The film stands above all versions of music. “We wanted to find music that was equal in our genius. So we chose Shostakovich ‘s music, which was written more or less in the same years. It’ s a brand new Shostakovich, he ‘s a little over twenty,” says Arthur Muscat.

Dmitry Shostakovich’s youthful works resemble Keaton’s film both stylistically and in terms of mood and associations. The composer’s music of the 1930s for films, theater performances, as well as ballets and jazz suites is extremely witty, vital, endowed with a brilliant nerve of theatricality, it is also very expressive and, in the fullest sense of the word, cinematic. Alongside Shostakovich, the reggae Original Rags by the American composer Scott Joplin also sounds as a reminder of the film’s operating environment.

Bass Kitton’s silent comedy Sherlock the youngest is a masterpiece of cinema classics, which has made laughing for many generations. It tells the story of a film mechanic who, most of all in the world, wants to become a private detective and solve various crimes.
In his youth, Dmitry Shostakovich – in the 1920s – earned like a taper – spent silent film screenings on the piano. Also in the film itself Sherlock the youngest there is a taper that musically accompanies what is happening on the screen.

In the cinema program The sound we see. The space we hear on August 7 at 20 At the Cēsis Contemporary Art Center, the festival offers to watch a film with a short title but a strong sound background.
Frica Langa trilleris M (1931) with Peter Lorri in the lead role is an example of expressionist cinema. M is Lang ‘s first sound film, in which the musical leitmotif plays as strongly as the increase in visual tension. Another example of sound tension in a film is the silence in the shots before the sudden noise. Lang uses both the commentary curtain voice, the sounds that motivate the action of the film ‘s characters, and the sounds that are not in the room, “says Uldis Tīrons, the curator of the film program. The film is shown at the festival with the support of the Goethe Institute.
