This way you can make a party of King’s Day with your children NOW

Another event that looks very different in 2020: King’s Day. This year renamed Residential Day by the Royal Association of Orange Societies, because staying at home is still the motto. Yet you can also make it a festive day with the children from home. NU.nl gives seven tips.

Sing or play the Wilhelmus

On King’s Day, Monday, April 27 at 10 a.m., everyone can sing along or play the Wilhelmus with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. From the balcony, from the window, the garden or doorway. The orchestra hopes to start King’s Day with a grand and positive gesture of solidarity. Sheet music of the national anthem has been made available on the website of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra for all kinds of instrumentation: orchestras, choirs, string quartets and duos. There are also melodies for various instruments such as a saxophone, guitar, piano or accordion.

Craft a crown

One of the things you can do well if you have to stay indoors is tinkering. King’s Day is the perfect day to make a beautiful crown with your children, which they can then wear for the rest of the day. Annemieke from mom blog Lady Lemonade shows how to make a beautiful King’s Day crown with colored paper, glue, scissors, decorations, a cotter pin and a perforator.

Play Old Dutch games

This year, the royal family would celebrate King’s Day in Maastricht. Undoubtedly they had awaited a nice program there again, with performances and perhaps also some Old Dutch games. You can of course do the latter together at home. Create a game trail in the house and in the garden with old-fashioned games, such as bag walking, biscuit bites, nail shit and donkey prick. Doing these games yourself is perhaps even more fun!

Online free market

On the sales website Marktplaats you can participate in an online free market on King’s Day. Give your kids a small amount to spend and go bargain hunting together. Or collect all the things that are allowed to leave and display them on a rug. Take a photo and share it in an advertisement on the VrijMarktplaats. In the description, list all products with the price. When picking up and selling items, of course, keep to RIVM guidelines. Marktplaats offers the possibility to donate (part of) the proceeds from the carpet to the Children Cancer Free Foundation (KiKa) afterwards.

Grab Bag

A popular free market component is the grab bag. For a small amount, children can then scramble for a gift. You can easily copy such a grab bag at home. Fill a cardboard box, a large pan, or an umbrella stand with straw or wads of newspaper. Pack small gifts (for example, a car, a spinner or a nice pen) and hide them in the grab bag. Have your kids take turns grabbing for a present.

Toast the king

Prepare orange snacks together and prepare a bottle of (children’s) bubbles cold. At 4 pm it is time for the National Toast, a King’s Day toast that is being released simultaneously throughout the Netherlands. Whether indoors, on the balcony or in the front or backyard, raise the glass with your child (ren) for better times and the health of everyone.

King’s Day festival and musical free market

On King’s Day almost every radio station plays music from Dutch artists all day long under the guise of ‘Samen Oranje’. Radio station Qmusic broadcasts a King’s Day festival on King’s Day with a line-up of well-known artists, such as Martin Garrix, Ilse DeLange, Nielson, André Hazes Jr. and Racoon. Children up to the age of twelve can register with Qmusic for a performance on the radio. During the performance, the cap is circulated in the Qmusic app. A maximum of 50 euros of this goes to the small artist.
