Is a change then even worth it?
Absolutely. Because loyalty takes revenge. For existing customers, car insurance contracts are often becoming more expensive from year to year. It’s usually only ten or 20 euros, but over the years that quickly adds up to 100 euros or more. But anyone who concludes a new contract – regardless of whether with the previous insurer or a new provider – benefits from the price war between motor insurers during the changeover season.
According to calculations by Stiftung Warentest, many insured persons can save several hundred euros. According to Check24 calculations, consumers pay ten percent less for liability insurance in October than in July. “We assume that this development will continue and that the motor vehicle liability premium will fall even further this year than last year,” says Stuber. “The insurers had to regulate fewer claims because of the corona restrictions and that could have a positive effect on insurance premiums.”
Which factors influence the insurance premium?
In addition to the vehicle type, regional class and the no-claims discount (SF class), a large number of other features are included in the premium calculation – such as the insured person’s place of residence. Even within a city like Hamburg there can be big differences, as Check24 found in a study. The insurance premium (liability with fully comprehensive insurance) for drivers in Hamburg increases by up to 15 percent the closer they live on Bergedorfer Straße into town. Age, annual mileage and the number and age of drivers also play a role. Any group of drivers can make the policy more expensive by 179 percent.

Who are the cheapest insurers?
In extensive calculations, Stiftung Warentest has identified some insurers that, as a rule, do far better than the average for many motorists in terms of premium levels. But that also depends on the respective tariff. These insurers include Axa Easy, Deutsche Allgemeine, Hanse Merkur, HUK24 and Verti. Details can be found in the current “Finanztest” booklet. In the non-representative sample calculations for Hamburg drivers in the graphic, HUK Coburg and its subsidiary, direct insurance HUK 24, can hold their own among the cheapest providers four times. Alte Leipziger is represented three times and WGV, VHV and Sparkassenversicherung twice each.
Which benefits are important for a car insurance?
“We recommend the maximum coverage of 100 million euros for the total damage,” says Kerstin Becker-Eiselen, insurance expert at the Hamburg consumer center. Personal injury should be insured for at least eight million euros. In the case of fully comprehensive insurance, the insurer should dispense with the objection of gross negligence.
Such an accusation can be made, for example, if you drive over a red traffic light out of carelessness and cause an accident as a result. The insurer can then reduce the payments for your own car. “Damage caused by collisions with animals of all kinds should be insured via an extended game damage clause,” advises Bianca Boss from the Association of Insureds. The insurance should also cover damage caused by marten bites and their consequential damage.
How do the tariffs differ in the sample invoices?
The young driver opts for a basic tariff with partially comprehensive insurance because he wants to insure the car at a particularly low price. This usually goes hand in hand with a workshop commitment in the case of comprehensive damage. The customer may only drive in workshops suggested by the insurer. However, all five tariffs dispense with the objection of gross negligence. The HUK24 Classic Select tariff is significantly better than the HUK Coburg Basic Select tariff. The direct insurer has an extended game damage clause, which means that it does not only insure collisions with wild animals. In addition, consequential damage caused by animal bites is compensated for up to 20,000 euros.
None of this is included in the parent company’s tariff. New car drivers have to pay the highest contributions. This is due to some extras that are important for a new car. The three cheapest providers grant a replacement value compensation of 24 months in the event of a total loss or theft. Since the vehicle was bought with a loan, there is still so-called GAP coverage for comprehensive insurance. In the event of a total loss, it covers the gap between the replacement value paid by the insurance company and the remaining claim of the bank or leasing company. If the financing time and the duration of the replacement value compensation are identical, there is no need for GAP coverage. Apart from new vehicles, a standard tariff is sufficient for comfortable insurance.
What other savings are there?
Due to the corona-related decline in damage, the HUK has announced a premium refund to its most recent 12.4 million motor vehicle insured. The – as it is said – significant reimbursement is offset against the premium for the policy for the next year. So if you switch to the competition, you get nothing. Anyone who has driven fewer kilometers than stated in the car insurance because of work in the home office can report this to their insurer. Many insurers then adjust the premiums retrospectively.
How do I get cheaper insurance?
It takes a little effort. With the registration certificate in hand, an individual comparison can be made on comparison portals such as nafi-auto.de, Check 24 or Verivox. All essential criteria can be seen in these comparisons. “We recommend nafi-auto or test.de from Stiftung Warentest because the commercial comparison portals such as Check 24 do not contain all insurers,” says Becker-Eiselen. For example, HUK Coburg and HUK24 are not included.
