“Our new study has given us a better insight into the dominance of the Delta variant,” said Kin-Chow Chang, a professor of Veterinary Molecular Medicine at the University of Nottingham in the UK.

“Although we have shown that this variant is clearly the most infectious and promotes the production of other variants in co-infection, we are pleased to have shown that TG is as effective as all of them.”

After demonstrating its efficacy in the lab, the next step would be to actually develop a treatment from TG, which will of course take time – as you’d expect from an agent developed from a poisonous plant, it would require a significant amount of further research to turn it into something safe. for humans.

Testing it against cell culture and getting promising results is by no means a guarantee that this antiviral will eventually pass clinical trials, but it is a very exciting first step for sure.

“Together, these results demonstrate the antiviral potential of TG as a post-exposure prophylactic and active therapeutic agent,” said Kin-Chow Chang.
