This Lord of the Rings game will not be released

Amazon Game Studios has canceled an ongoing Lord of the Rings online role-playing game. In 2019, the company announced a free games for PC and consoles together with Leyou-owned Athlon Games.

Back to the time before the events of The Lord of the Rings took place

The game was to be added to “a time long before the events of the Lord of the Rings took place”. It was to “explore lands, people and creatures that have never been seen by fans of the Tolkien universe”. But Leyou was acquired by Tencent Holdings in December, and a spokesman for Amazon said the company was unable to secure this game.

The team from the Lord of the Rings project will work on other games, the spokesman added. “We love The Lord of the Rings and are disappointed that we will not be able to launch the game.”

Since its launch in 2014, Amazon Game Studios has not yet launched a successful video game, advertised games have either canceled or delayed. The video game version of The Grand Tour received such bad reviews in 2019 that it was taken down. In January, Bloomberg reported that the game studio had problems with an internal culture that did not give women and men equal opportunities and a “painfully slow” game engine.

Internal issues in Amazon Game Studios

Amazon’s incoming CEO Andy Jassy says he prioritizes the video game division. It was launched by outgoing Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who is stepping down as CEO later this year.

Meanwhile, Amazon plans to pay an incredible 3.9 billion kroner for the first season of the TV show Lord of the Rings.
