This is what Bremen hotel operators say about the openings at Christmas – news from Bremen

Ulrich Straten probably wants to close his main building, the Hotel Residence, over Christmas. He makes it dependent on demand – which has so far been poor. (Christina Kuhaupt)

The opening of hotels and other hostels is a topic that has been a topic of particular concern to politics nationwide in the past few weeks. Should they be opened for family visits over Christmas, or should the general ban on accommodation remain in place? In Bremen, the Senate is planning for Christmas: relatives who want to visit their family over the holidays are allowed to stay in hotels. The reason is that such overnight stays can be classified as non-touristy.

But how do the hoteliers concerned see the new idea? Is it even worth it to open the hostel over Christmas if it had to remain closed in the past few weeks – or was only allowed to remain open for business travelers and other few exceptions?

Detlef Pauls, Chairman of the Dehoga Hotel and Restaurant Association in Bremen, welcomes the Senate’s decision in principle. “Not everyone has a huge apartment, you have to think about the people too. And when you have to sleep with ten people in an apartment for two, it becomes very tight. The risk of infection is much lower in the hotel, ”he says. His hotel, the Ringhotel Munte am Stadtwald, will remain open, “even if not as many people come as in previous years.”

Nevertheless, he has heard from many colleagues who want to close their hotels and pensions over the holidays – including those who are currently still open to business travelers. It is difficult to explain to employees that they were barely allowed to work in the past few weeks, but are now supposed to work under the worst conditions.

Many people prefer to stay at home

Ulrich Straten from Hotel Residence, for example, is still undecided and thinks that his decision will be made when the demand increases. “I don’t think many people want to stay in hotels. They are tired from going back and forth and therefore prefer to stay at home. ”The Hotel Residence has three buildings, of which the main building is closed over Christmas. The other two, which also have their own kitchens, stayed open depending on demand. “I think it’s good that the politicians are opening up the possibility for us as hoteliers,” says Straten. Usually at this time of the year he already had a few reservations, this year there are only “very few”.

The Atlantic Grand Hotel should remain open, explains managing director Markus Griesenbeck. “Christmas has never been big business for our hotels, it will be even less this year. But I appreciate the opportunity to be able to open. ”According to Griesenbeck, the other hotels in the group, the Universum, Galopprennbahn and Airport hotels, will close over the holidays. No decision has yet been made for the house in Vegesack.

For the Parkhotel in the Bürgerpark, the basic principle is: continue as in November. “In economic terms, of course, it doesn’t cover the whole picture. But we are there to welcome guests and will therefore remain open, ”says hotel manager Steffen Eisermann.

The guests should sign an affidavit stating that they are only staying in the hotel as a family visit, there is no other control option for the hoteliers. However, guests only have to present the insurance if they are checked by the public order office.

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry considers the Senate’s decision to be sensible, as Daniel Karsch, Consultant for Tourism, Environment, Industry and Innovation at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, told WESER-KURIER: “The hotels in the state of Bremen are subject to the currently applicable Corona regulation particularly restricted in their economic activity. It is therefore important now that politicians ensure planning security and that companies can accept bookings for the days around Christmas. “

Criticism from the Chancellor

In addition to Bremen, the federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, Hesse, Schleswig-Holstein, Berlin and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania have also allowed overnight stays in hotels over the festive period. No fixed date has yet been set in Bremen. Baden-Württemberg has restricted the period to December 23rd to 27th. In Bavaria it has not yet been determined how hotel overnight stays will be regulated over Christmas; the situation is similar in other federal states.

Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) criticized the plans to open hotels on the grounds that it was impossible to check whether they were visiting relatives or really tourist guests. Your spokesman Steffen Seibert emphasized: “Citizens are called upon to avoid tourist trips.” Travel for family reasons is difficult to distinguish from tourist trips.
