“Pyongyang decided to recognize the independence of the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Lugansk People’s Republic and expressed a desire to develop state-to-state relations with those countries on the idea of ​​independence, peace and friendship,” according to KCNA.

To date, North Korea is the third country to recognize the independence of the republic proclaimed by pro-Russian separatists. Apart from North Korea, Syria is also reported to have recognized the independence.

To note, the Russian side does recognize the eastern region Ukraine it became an independent territory shortly before launching its invasion of pro-European neighbor Ukraine on February 24. Russia’s ally Syria made the diplomatic move last month.

Ukrainian Government Breaks Diplomatic Relations

Earlier in the day, Ukraine’s foreign ministry in a statement Wednesday condemned North Korea’s decision to recognize territory that Kiev described as territory “temporarily occupied by Russia”.

“In response Ukraine announced it would cut off diplomatic relations with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea,” the statement said.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said Russia no longer had allies in the world. According to him, Russia is only supported by countries that depend on Russia financially.
