this is the PS5 controller

DualSense is the name of the remote control you will use PS5, a new generation console that Sony will launch, in theory, on November 20 of this year, and that will mark an important leap at the hardware level.

We have already talked a lot about what PS5 will mean for the video game sector, and about limitations that this console, and its direct rival, Xbox Series X, will allow us to overcome once and for all, and we know that thanks to the support of ray tracing hardware accelerated on both consoles developers will begin to focus their efforts on such technology, something that will benefit PC gamers who have a compatible graphics card.

There’s no doubt that hardware is going to mark a major turning point, but DualSense isn’t going to be left behind. This new control knob brings a new design, which translates into a completely renewed ergonomics, and will also have a haptic response system that could mark a turning point in terms of immersion.

Those of you who had the chance to experience the arrival of the vibration motors at the console controls, first with the Nintendo 64 Rumble Pack and then with the PS1 DualShockYou will agree with me that very little has been innovated during all these years. The debut of the vibration was a very interesting improvement in 1997, but we are in the middle of 2020 and the concept has hardly changed since then.

DualSense: immersion through touch

A game can fully immerse us in the action through different routes. The first is the most obvious, its graphic quality. This aspect is influenced by other aspects that go beyond realism at a visual level, such as the setting and certain design elements. We have another way in the sound, and the third is found in the gameplay and in the way we interact with the game.

Think, for example, of the immersion that the vibrations of the control unit get when we play a driving title, or those same reactions applied to an action game. When used correctly help us “feel” the game, and to immerse ourselves in it in a much more intense and interesting way.

As well, DualSense will allow us to feel the games like we never have. Suppose a true evolution against the classical vibration, hence the name change that Sony has given it. Thanks to the haptic response motors the DualSense can recreate different levels of vibration and resistance on the buttons.

For example, if we are running with our character on a muddy surface, the trigger we use to move faster could have a tougher touchwhereas if we are on a clean surface it would have softer touch. Another interesting example. When we tighten a bow the trigger could be soft in the first section, and harder in the last one, which is where the greatest tension of the rope is concentrated.

A very interesting proposal, without a doubt. In the attached video you can see a first look at the DualSense, and in the second you will find the presentation “in depth” of it, which will run a cargo de Geoff Keighley (The Game Awards) and it will start in a few minutes. I invite you to follow the event with us.

Personally I must say that the new design of the DualSense does not end up liking it. I see changes in ergonomics that I don’t know to what extent they will be really comfortable, although in fairness I must admit that I have not finished getting used to the PS4 control either. I have said console, but on PC I play with the Xbox One controller.
