There is a young man who is narrated in the words of the Prophet SAW, he is known to be obedient and obedient to his mother and is known as an inhabitant of heaven. He is Uwais Al-Qarni.
In a hadith narrated by Muslim, Umar said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah say, ‘Indeed the best tabi’in is a person named Uwais, he has an old man, and he has leprosy. Tell him to beg forgiveness for you.”
Imam Ahmad also narrated a similar hadith, that the Prophet SAW once said, “Once, when you meet him (Uwais), ask for his prayers and istighfar. He is an inhabitant of heaven, not an earthling.”
The story of Uwais Al-Qarni is widely written as an exemplary Islamic story. He is a young man from Yemen who has been living as an orphan for a long time. He lives with his elderly mother.
The figure of Uwais Al-Qarni whose real name is Uwais bin Amir is so admired among the companions of the prophet. Quoting a book Moral Guidance in the Quran and Sunnah By Hardisman, the story of Uwais is mentioned in a hadith from Usair Ibn Jabir which explains that Umar bin Khattab RA once asked Uwais bin Amir to pray.
It is said that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) told Umar RA that a young man named Uwais from Yemen would come from the Qaran Kabilah Murad tribe, and he explained his physical signs.
Rasulullah said that if the young man asked Allah SWT, then his prayer was never rejected. To get a prayer from Uwais, Umar RA sought it out and asked the Yemeni tribes when they came or passed through Medina.
After finding it, Umar RA then asked Uwais to say a prayer to Allah SWT. Uwais immediately prayed for him.
Uwais Al-Qarni’s Daily Life
Aminudin and Harjan Syuhada in the book Al-Qur’an Hadis explained that Uwais’ daily life is taking care of his mother. To make ends meet, Uwais works as a goat herder.
The wages he earns are just enough to live daily with his mother. When there is still leftovers, he uses it to help his neighbors who live in poverty and deprivation like himself.
Working as a goatherd doesn’t make it Uwais Al-Qarni receded in worship. He fasts during the day and prays to Allah SWT at night.
Quoting a book The Story of the Life of Uwais al Qarni the Inhabitant of Heaven Beloved of the Lord of the Universe by Muhammad Vandestra, Uwais and his mother converted to Islam after hearing the call of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca.
He was a pious young man and greatly glorified his mother. Uwais always took care of and fulfilled his mother’s request.
At one time, Uwais asked permission from his mother to meet the Prophet Muhammad who was in Medina at that time. His mother also allowed him by telling Uwais to hurry home because he was already sickly.
After getting permission from his mother, Uwais immediately rushed to Medina. However, when he arrived at the house of the Prophet Muhammad he could not meet him. Because the Prophet SAW was in the middle of a war.
Remembering his mother’s message to go home soon, Uwais then said goodbye to the wife of the Prophet Muhammad, Aisyah RA, and sent greetings to the Prophet Muhammad. He went straight to Yemen to take care of his mother.
Obedience to the mother is also reflected when her mother is eager to go to the Holy Land to perform the pilgrimage. In a state of complete deprivation, Uwais continues to think of ways to fulfill his mother’s wishes. Finally, the mother carried from Yemen to Mecca.
Uwais Al-Qarni is an example for Muslims of the glory of his nature and deeds. A figure like him is the one who is very loved by Rasulullah SAW.
