This is Malaysia’s double key to dampen Ahsan/Hendra’s experience

Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik bend Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan to win badminton bronze medal Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Malaysian doubles reveal the key.

Chia/Wooi Yik met Ahsan/Hendra again in the race for the bronze medal in men’s doubles badminton at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Previously, both of them ran aground in the semifinals.

In the group phase, Chia/Wooi Yik had time to meet Ahsan/Hendra, and the results lost 19-21 and 16-21. In the second meeting, they can achieve different results.

Competing at Musashino Forest Plaza, Saturday (31/7/2021), Chia/Wooi Yik played better. Both of them were finally able to beat Ahsan/Hendra, who in fact are ranked second in the world.

Chia/Wooi Yik defeated Ahsan/Hendra in a three -game duel. Having lost in the first game with a score of 17-21, the Malaysian pair responded to the next two games with victories 21-17 and 21-14.

After the match, Chia/Wooi Yik revealed the key to their victory. Both admitted that they had prepared a strategy to reduce the experience of their opponents, who were much more senior.

“Before we went to the field, we had devised a strategy because they were experienced. Even so, we still lost in the first game,” said Wooi Yik, reported by Bernama.

“In the second game, we didn’t mess up and still gave our best, because we had faith in ourselves. And finally, we were able to beat them in three games,” explained the 23-year-old badminton player.

For Malaysian badminton, Chia/Wooi Yik’s victory brought the third medal from the men’s doubles event. Previously two silver medals could be won at the 1996 Atalanta Olympics and the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
