Imants Kalniņš composed the opera 20 years ago, it has been stored in his library until now, and now, over time, the monumental opus will meet its listeners in a concert performance. It is staged by musical director Ainārs Rubiķis and director Rēzija Kalniņa.

Latvian Radio meets with the creative group in a rehearsal of the play, in which soloists Juris Jope and Edgars Ošleja perform their scores. At that time, director Rēzija Kalniņa and choreographer Inga Krasovska work with them.

The production is dedicated to the 120th anniversary of Čaka and the 80th anniversary of Imants Kalniņš, but – as Rēzija Kalniņa emphasizes during the rehearsal – the trinity is very important in the context of this work, which can be described as Čaks-Kalniņš-Rubiķis, because Ainārs Rubiķis is the author of this premiere.

“Earlier this year, in anticipation of Imants Kalniņš ’80th anniversary, he said:’ Sincerely! I owe him! I want to do it, and are you with me? ”I said,“ Of course I am with you! ”Rēzija Kalniņa recalls. “But we can’t say that we are only alone with Ainārs. The team is very important to us – it includes Dace Micāne-Zālīte, set designer, artist Sandra Strēle, who has painted all this scenography with her own hands, fabulous lighting artist Ainārs Pastars, Inga Krasovska, Ilze Vītoliņa, filming team led by Imants Zaķīte and Līga Pipers. “

Musicians of the Sinfonietta Rīga Orchestra and the Riga Sol Choir “Ave Sol” take part in the production of the opera, as well as opera soloists – Juris Jope, Armands Siliņš, Krišjānis Norvelis, Viktorija Pakalniece, Artjoms Safronovs, Edgars Ošleja and Rihards Millers.

Rēzija Kalniņa continues: “This is the trinity of this creative project – it is Ainars, it is, of course, the priest and it is Chuck. which is basically the world, because everyone is on that ship, and that river or that sea, or that water, that ‘s the music that takes us forward. “It ‘s the music that brings us out, highlights us out of the afterlife, out of the ordinary.”

The plot and musical material of the opera encodes the greatest points of strength and weakness of all mankind, it is a very multi-layered story that also asks a lot of questions – admits Ainars Rubikis. He explains: “The beginning of everything is as in Riga, and then the second act, our second act, begins with the forest, when Matiss has left the city of Riga, the pubs of Riga, all this bunny here or the world that has eaten and eaten him, and he is looking for his roots, he is looking for why he is, he is looking for his mission, and of course he doesn’t really find himself in this forest either, because that’s not his calling either. in the pub of the first song as he transforms from an antihero into a hero. “

The title role in the opera is played by Juris Jope, who emphasizes: “The most important thing that is shown in this work is selfless love, a person’s constant search for self-fulfillment, for the meaning of life. from the roots to the ends of the hair, however, it is Imants Kalniņš, and Matīss has many different colors, and we are working hard with Rēzija Kalniņš and Ainārs Rubiķis to find all the possible edges in Matīsa that can be found. “

The opera singer, the owner of the expressive bass voice, plays the role of Tavern in the opera: ” it’s fun, then there are attractions, dancing on the tables, then a lot of customers come to him, he demands beer and everything is very nice, and then suddenly at one point Matiss doesn’t want to come to drink again. “The innkeeper is, in my opinion, such a manipulative image. But even when he does all this evil, he doesn’t feel that he is evil. Because he is already good to himself.”

The premiere of Imants Kalniņš’s opera “Matīss – Cup Bajārs” in the format of a concert performance will take place on Sunday, December 5, in the Liepāja Concert Hall “Lielais dzintars”, it will also be available on the Latvian Radio 3 “Klasika”.
