This is how Tom Hanks explains the world to children

New in the cinema

The actor wants to rebel against cynicism as a TV host, “Game of Thrones” star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau checks into a hotel from which no one can escape – and other films that are new to the cinema.

  • Nikolaj Coster-Waldau checks into a hotel behind which there is an euthanasia organization.

“A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood”

In the 1950s and 1960s, Fred Rogers declared as a happy neighbor in the US series «Mr. Rogers ’Neighborhood» Children’s everyday things. For “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” Tom Hanks slips into the role of the moderator.

The cynical journalist Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys) tells his father Jerry (Chris Cooper) that he has disappeared from his life. To give Lloyd a boost, the editor-in-chief assigns him a good mood story: he is supposed to write a portrait about Rogers.

Rogers surprised Vogel

Reluctantly, Lloyd agrees – when he meets the moderator, contrary to his expectations, a friendship develops, which also affects Lloyd’s relationship with his father.

Tom Hanks tells the BBC that he was offered the role because he is referred to as the “nicest guy” in Hollywood – just like Fred Rogers.

Alternative to cynicism

Hanks doesn’t see himself that way, but he said yes because the film shows a positive alternative to cynicism: “For many, being cynical has become standard practice in everyday life,” says Hanks.

It is important to him to spread joy – also in the spirit of Rogers, who died in 2003. His advice to get help, especially in difficult situations, continues to accompany Hanks: “It is important to remember that there is always hope,” he says to “NPR”.

“Suicide Tourist”

“It’s about a man who tries to control everything in his life – including his departure,” says director Jonas Alexander Arnby in “Cineuropa”, summarizing his new work.

In it, Max (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) suffers from an incurable brain tumor that changes his personality – before he is no longer himself, he wants to take his own life. However, his acquaintance Alice (Tuva Novotny) calls him and asks him to help her clarify the death of her husband Arthur.

Nobody escapes from this hotel

During his research, Max discovers the remote Hotel Aurora in the mountains of Norway, behind which there is an euthanasia organization – on the pretext of following Arthur’s footsteps, Max contacts the hotel out of his own interest.

“It is the dilemma of a man who wants to live, but is so afraid of the future that he decides to end his life,” explains Coster-Waldau at “CNN Money”.

When her mother dies and her father moves out, Seconda has to venture outside after years of isolation and tries to break out of her limited living space with creative methods.

“You Will Die At 20”

The newborn Muzamil (Mustafa Shehata) is said to be baptized in a Sudanese village, but the Imam collapses during a long enumeration of just twenty.

After the accident, it was clear to those present that the boy would not be older than twenty. The prophecy shaped Muzamil’s childhood and youth until he finally reached his supposed age of death.
