This is how a relegated player plays: Osnabrück is defeated by Düsseldorf 0: 3 | NDR.de – Sport

Status: 04/18/2021 3:53 p.m.

VfL Osnabrück has expanded its second division negative record. The Lower Saxony conceded the twelfth home defeat in a row in the 0: 3 (0: 1) against Fortuna Düsseldorf and presented themselves like a relegated.

by Hanno Bode

When referee Sven Jablonski (Bremen) whistled at halftime on Sunday afternoon, VfL coach Markus Feldhoff, standing on the sideline, put his head in his right hand and mumbled something to himself. The 46-year-old looked just as stunned as he was shocked in view of the performance of his team. The table-16 had no shot on goal. Made in the first 45 minutes. And his defense was overwhelmed by many attacks in Düsseldorf.

The fact that the deficit at the break was only 0: 1 and not 0: 3 or 0: 4 was only due to keeper Philipp Kühn and Fortun’s usury of chances. In short: Osnabrück did not show a performance suitable for the second division.

Keeper Kühn prevents longer breaks in the break

The purple-whites made every effort to make life as difficult as possible for the candidate for promotion. Willingness to work and tough duels were right. In the decisive one-on-one duels, however, the home side too often lost out. The individually superior Düsseldorfer combined quickly after winning the ball and thus repeatedly presented the VfL defense with major problems. It’s good for Lower Saxony that Kühn was a great support after an initial wobble. The 28-year-old thwarted Dawid Kownacki (4th, 38th, 41st) and Marcel Sobottka (18th).

Once, however, the goalkeeper was also powerless when Kristoffer Peterson circled precisely from the left corner of the box into the right corner of the goal – the 1-0 (37th). Osnabrück’s answer to the goal against: none.

“If we keep playing like this, we have no chance.”
Markus Feldhoff, coach of VfL Osnabrück

VfL harmless even after half-time

So it could only get better from VfL’s point of view in the second section. But it wasn’t. Because 180 seconds after the restart, Kevin Wolze went awkwardly against Kownacki in his own penalty area. Referee Jablonski decided after viewing the footage on a penalty for the guests, which the fouled himself converted to 2-0 (50th). The Osnabrück team did not react to the goal. When Sobottka defeated Kühn for the third time in the 67th minute, the decision was finally made.

After all: Shortly afterwards Marc Heider forced Fortune keeper Florian Kastenmeier to make his first parade on this sunny afternoon (71st). However, the imprecise conclusion could not cover up the fact that VfL had caught a pitch-black day.

Kühn: “It won’t be enough”

“If we continue to play like this, we have no chance. We just have to see that we can achieve the turnaround in the next few games. Then we may be able to achieve something extraordinary, which perhaps no one is expecting anymore,” Feldhoff told the NDR. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Kühn stated soberly: “It won’t be enough.”
