This is Giri, the Hindu Monk Who Calls for Genocide of Indian Muslims

NEW DELHI – Yati Narsinghanand Giri, Hindu monk in India has called for genocide against Moslems local. He has been taken to court on charges of inciting religious violence.

Senior police officer, Swatantra Kumar, was quoted as saying AP on Tuesday (18/1/2022), said the monk, also known as a vocal supporter of far-right nationalists, heads a Hindu monastery.

He was initially arrested on Saturday last week on charges that he made hate speech.

He appeared the next day in court in the city of Haridwar, where he was sent to prison for 14 days for hate speech against Muslims and calling for violence against them.

Kumar said the monk Giri, whom he described as a “repeat offender”, was formally tried Monday for promoting enmity between different groups on religious grounds.

The charge could carry a five -year prison sentence.

In December, Giri and other religious leaders called on Hindus to arm themselves for genocide against Muslims during a gathering in Haridwar, the northern holy city in Uttarakhand.

He is the second person to be arrested in the case after India’s Supreme Court intervened last week.

Uttarakhand is ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a Hindu nationalist party led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
