This is an explanation of why blood type A is more at risk of contracting Covid-19

KONTAN.CO.ID – NEW YORK. The results of a recent study by scientists show that there is new evidence that people with blood type A have a greater risk of being infected with Covid-19.

Launch Hubnews.co, the new study is published in the journal Blood Advances on Wednesday (3/3/2021).

“Despite the devastating consequences of SARS-CoV-2, not all individuals appear to be equally susceptible to contracting the virus,” the study said.

The researchers examined the receptor-binding domain (RBD), a protein on the surface of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that attaches to host cells.

They then looked at how RBD interacts with various red blood cells and respiration from blood types A, B and O.

“No significant binding was observed to the type II structure of individuals A, B, or O (H). In contrast, SARS-CoV-2 RBD showed a high preference for the same type of blood group A (type I) expressed on cells. respiratory epithelium, “the study reads.

Scientists say this may provide some insight into the clear preferences of Covid-19 and the possibility of other severe coronaviruses for people with blood type A.

Researchers say this does not mean that those with blood types B and O are immune to the virus, but say it does show that people with blood type A are more likely to become infected.

Study author Dr Sean Stowell, of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, said in a press release that the results of his research were very interesting.

“This blood type is a challenge because it is lowered and not something we can change,” he said. “But if we can better understand how viruses interact with blood types in humans, we may be able to find new drugs or methods of prevention.”

However, scientists say more research is needed to predict how the coronavirus will affect people with different blood types.

“Our observations are not the only mechanism responsible for what we are seeing clinically, but could explain some of the influence of blood type on cases of Covid-19 infection,” the team said.
