The 23 episodes in which he played that charismatic patient, between 2006 and 2009, gave him the opportunity that had been denied him in Hollywood for 20 years. He left Seattle Grace Hospital and discovered that he was neither “that old”, nor had he so “little talent”, as his first manager told him when he kicked him out just a few months before this launch.
Morgan remembers that he was about nine years old when he first appeared in a play: “I was the lead but I just had to pretend to be asleep all the time,” he laughs. He was not interested in the experience.
15 years later, he accompanied his best friend, as an extra, to a movie. He was still not interested. “I had no intention of being an actor. I was an artist, I liked to be an artist. He painted pictures and sold them in bars to pay the rent, ”he says, and confesses that he has not held a brush for a long time.
But life continued to contradict him and lead him towards interpretation. He accompanied a friend on his move to Los Angeles and within four days of being there he decided to stay, encouraged by a casting director who told him he had a future. He believed it.
“And I spent the next 20 years in the dry dock. Trying to figure out how to make a living and feed my dog. Without education, without anything. I had put all the eggs in a single basket ”, he recalls resigned.
However, all those setbacks only encouraged him to fight a little more for a place in the industry. And as always happens, it came to him overnight. After the hospitable soap opera, the cinema wanted him as a new heartthrob of romantic stories (PS: I love you, Husband by surprise), with many female fans on the other side of the screen.
So Morgan, always a bit rebellious, shook off the Don Juan charisma and decided to accept the challenge of becoming Edward Blake, the Comedian, one of the antiheroes of Watchmen, with the ugly habit of smoking cigars, in adapting Zack Snyder (2009).
On the big screen, that’s probably still his big project. Because it has been on television where he has established himself as a world star. Like that private investigator who almost convinced Alicia Florrick on The Good Wife. Or as the vengeful father of Supernatural. Or in single episodes, but keys in Weeds, Shameless Y The O.C.
All together they have been leading him to the great character on his resume so far: Negan, leader of the Saviors, in The Walking Dead. A character who already knew he would end up playing five years before hitting zombie terrain on the Georgia set.

“I was at San Diego Comic-Con and someone brought me the new comic from Robert Kirkman, The Walking Dead it was one of the few series that I was following at the time. This person told me, ‘There’s a new character, Negan, you should play him.’ Cut to five years later, I’m rolling The Good Wife and my agent calls me, they want me in The Walking Dead, but who does not know for what character. “He will be a villain, but I don’t see it that way, I won’t say that I feel comfortable playing the bad guy, but it is liberating.
