This Astronaut Is Happy To Eat French Chef’s Cuisine In Space

Jakarta

Food in space is notorious for being bland and just a thick, unappetizing liquid. In fact, there is actually delicious food prepared directly by a French chef.

Reporting from DigitalTrends (9/10), most people think food para astronaut in space is not good. Food stocks on the space station are mostly in the form of thick paste that is put in a bag. This food can then be eaten using a straw.

But the times are getting more sophisticated, now astronauts can eat delicious food and even the results of famous chef concoctions. French astronaut Thomas Pesquet, the current commander of the International Space Station (ISS), has just uploaded a video from the orbital kitchen. He showcased delicious food made by famous chefs.

In the video, Pesquet speaks in French. “Food! I was so excited about the arrival of my food that I made this food video,” Pesquet said last October 7.

Pesquet arrived at the space station in April 2021. Before leaving to complete this long mission, Pesquet first asked for food to be made by Chef Thierry Marx whose restaurant won a Michelin Star.

Chef Marx did not want to waste this opportunity, he worked with chemist Raphaël Haumont to create delicious food that could be consumed by astronauts in space. Chef Marx then made a special beef bourguignon, risotto and crêpes Suzette.

By still paying attention to the health of the astronaut, the nutrition of each of these foods is really considered. Food contains salt, fat and sugar in safe portions when consumed by astronauts in space.

“You have to look at astronauts as sportsmen,” Marx said in an interview. “Thomas Pesquet will be locked up there for six months and gaining weight is not an option.”

Pesquet described the special dishes stored in these tins as “party food” usually kept to be shared with astronauts on the weekends. This French chef’s special food is also saved when an astronaut wants to celebrate a birthday party or other celebration.

NASA also has long-standing partnerships with other well-known French chefs such as Alain Ducasse to create delicious dishes for consumption in space.

So the astronaut can enjoy space food, the chefs try to make the food richer in taste. This is because, in outer space the sense of taste tends to malfunction because the nasal cavity is blocked with fluid.
