It has been exactly 50 years since, at the beginning of July 1972, the car you see in these photos took to the track on the private circuit of Dudenhofen, in Germany, with the declared aim of breaking a lot of records and that, less declared but equally achieved, to show the world what a car with a diesel engine could do. The car in question was an Opel GT turbodiesel with modified single-seater bodywork and broke 20 records. Before then the idea of having a “performance” diesel engine under the hood was not even taken into consideration: diesel were robust, not performing.
