They killed Kenny, the bastards. Vaculík’s voice is a symbol of anime

IN TODAY’S EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN, AMONG OTHER THINGS:
  • Dubbing The Simpsons (1:40)
  • Jackie Chan in the Czech Republic (9:15)
  • Talking to yourself (14:48)
  • Distinguishing characters and showing voices (18:05)

“One sometimes thinks and wonders if it’s weird dubbing a twelve-year-old cartoon boy at fifty. But it’s about adapting to the role,” says Vaculík, who is one of the most employed Czech dubbers.

“South Park is one of the most difficult series when it comes to dubbing. It looks like easy work, but we dubbed six episodes in one day. It’s a huge strain on the vocal cords because you’re speaking in an altered voice the whole time. I don’t want to talk much at home,” Vaculík explains in the podcast.

But he also lends his voice to several real actors. In particular, he is the court dubber of Jackie Chan, whom he wooed in approximately eighty films. During her visit to the Czech Republic, the screen star herself even requested a meeting with Vaculík, which in the end did not happen due to her hasty departure to Hollywood.

“I was terribly sorry for that and I am still sorry for it today. Unfortunately, he had to leave one day before the planned meeting,” recalls Vaculík.

In the interview, Vaculík returns to the dubbing of Iron Man, when he was played by actor Robert Downey Jr. the director recast because of the “old voice”. “They really pissed me off with that. But I’m not angry,” Vaculík adds.

Watch the entire interview on video, you can also play it in the audio player at the beginning of the article.
