Mayor Murdered in Oaxaca, Sparking Investigation
Deadly Attack at City Hall
The community of San Mateo Piñas, Oaxaca, is reeling after a brazen attack claimed the life of the municipal president, Lilia Gema García Soto. The General Prosecutor of the State of Oaxaca (FGEO) has already begun an investigation into the tragic events that also resulted in the deaths of the municipal trustee and two local police officers.
According to reports, the assault unfolded at the heart of the municipal government, at the Municipal Presidency. Two individuals are said to have entered the building and opened fire on the officials. The Oaxaca Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the victims died at the scene from gunshot wounds.
Security Operation Launched
In the wake of the violence, a comprehensive security operation has been activated in the area. This includes the involvement of the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena), the Marina Secretariat (Semar), and the Ministry of Citizen Security and Protection (SSPC).

The Regional Vice-Fiscalía de la Costa, which is under the FGEO, is leading the investigation, with the aim of identifying the perpetrators. The authorities have stated they are conducting exhaustive research
to establish the facts and bring those responsible to justice.
The governor of Oaxaca, Salomón Jara Cruz, took to social media to express his condemnation of the murder. He stated, We strongly condemn the murder of the municipal president of San Mateo Piñas, Lilia Gema García Soto. There can be no impunity before this event. We will collaborate with the State Attorney General for clarify the facts and do justice. My condolences to your relatives.

Details of the Attack
Witness accounts indicate the assault occurred around 11:00 am. Armed individuals, their faces covered, reportedly arrived at the presidency on a motorcycle. They entered the building and opened fire on the mayor, who died at the scene.
The incident has ignited outrage among residents, who are demanding justice and increased security measures for San Mateo Piñas. Civil organizations have also voiced their condolences to the family of the official.
However, Lilia Gema García Soto had also faced criticism from some residents, who accused her of devaluing goods of the municipality and sell without consulting the people.
