they found the head on a stake

Swedish scientists discovered the Stone Age skull in 2018, and two years later they reveal what its face would be like, according to a computerized reconstruction.

8,000 years ago, a man’s head was placed on a stake, for unknown reasons. That skull was discovered two years ago in Sweden, and in 2020 we know what his face would have been like.

Thanks to a 3D facial reconstruction we can know what the face of the man in the stake would be like. The work was done by a forensic artist.

The skull was one of at least twelve, including a boy, found in a prehistoric lake in Sweden. According to the cited experts by the Daily Mail, they could have been killed in a ritual.

A very complex stone age ritual

Researchers from Stockholm University and the Swedish Cultural Heritage Foundation note that this is the first evidence that Stone Age hunters placed heads of their rivals on stakes.

“It is an example of a very complex ritual, which is very structured,” Dr. Fredrik Hallgren told Live Science. Hallgren belongs to the Foundation for Swedish Cultural Heritage.

“Although we cannot decipher the meaning of the ritual, we can appreciate its complexity,” stressed the authority.

How was the reconstruction performed?

Oscar Nilsson was the forensic artist who reconstructed the skull thanks to a tomographic scan and a 3D printer. Not having the jaw, the artist took an idea of how it could have been and realized it.

Reconstruction of the face

In addition to the remains of humans, archaeologists obtained remains of bears, rodents, and elk. This indicates that love for animals was part of religious beliefs.

During the Mesolithic period, the hunting of certain species was expanded, due to the extinction of some, with small mammals and birds such as geese and pheasants entering the diet. The group found in the Swedish lake was hunter-gatherers.
