Matamoros.- Authorities of Mexico and U.S they discovered a tunnel under the Bravo River to cross between the border cities of Matamoros and Brownsville, official sources informed Efe.
The tunnel was discovered on the side of Brownsville, Texas, by the United States Border Patrol on August 24 and the Mexican authorities were immediately notified, the sources indicated.
Hermann Rivera, spokesman for the Border Patrol of U.S, confirmed that they are already working with local, state and federal authorities in the investigation of this tunnel under the Bravo River, natural border between the two countries.
Luis Alberto Rodríguez, spokesman for the Coordination Group for the Reconstruction of Peace in Tamaulipas, pointed out that the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) has already taken control of the tunnel on the Mexican side.
Sedena agents positioned themselves from the afternoon of this Tuesday of the entrance of the tunnel, located on the banks of the Rio Grande river at the height of two residential subdivisions in Matamoros.
The city of Matamoros is controlled by the Gulf Cartel (CDG) and it is presumed that the tunnel was dug to cross drugs, weapons or for the illegal trafficking of people.
Luis Alberto Rodríguez recalled that Tamaulipas maintains coordination with seven federal agencies of U.S, related to security.
“Today, Wednesday, a work meeting was held in the city of Reynosa to reinforce collaboration in the border area with Texas,” the spokesperson added.
The meeting was attended by the Executive Secretariat of the State Public Security System, the Tamaulipas Special Operations Group, the United States Anti-Drug Agency, the Border Patrol, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Texas Department of Public Safety.
“Priority criminal targets operating on the border were reviewed, as well as effective communication mechanisms to strengthen bilateral cooperation,” Rodríguez said.
He stressed that the government of Tamaulipas and federal agencies that make up the Joint Task Force West of the Federal Government of the United States established the Security and Prosperity Campaigns in Reynosa and Nuevo Laredo.
“With the objective of exchanging information, developing joint strategies, as well as the identification and promotion of the complaint that allows the capture of relevant criminal targets in the border strip,” the spokesperson concluded.
The state of Tamaulipas is the cradle where two of the most important criminal groups in Mexico were born and operate. Mexico, the Gulf Cartel (CDG) and Los Zetas, an organization whose leaders renamed the Northeast Cartel (CDN).
