They extend the deadline to request the Real ID

Secretary of the Department of State, Elmer L. Román González, announced today that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), extended the expiration date to request the Real ID, until the October 1, 2021.

Given the state of emergency throughout the United States, as part of the measures to prevent and control the spread of COVID-19DHS made the determination to extend the deadline to apply for a driver’s license and conventional identification in the Real ID format.

The deadline for obtaining the Real ID, which had been established before the pandemic of coronavirus It was October 1, 2020.

The Real ID format was implemented in 2005, as part of efforts to strengthen the security and integrity of identity documents in the United States and its territories.

“The Real ID Act, which came into force in 2005, raised the security and authentication standards of citizens in the process of issuing driver’s licenses. The direct benefit for citizens is that they can use Real ID as official identification at airports when traveling to the United States, “said the Secretary of State in written statements.

He added that “this measure ensures that in Puerto Rico, the security elements are observed in the identifications of citizens and in the fight against fraud and identity theft, a criminal act that must be combated as protection of citizens.”

For his part, the Secretary of Transportation and Public Works, Carlos M. Contreras Aponte, maintained that “this extension, although necessary, is not an invitation to leave the application for your license or identification in Real ID format until the last minute. On the contrary, my exhortation to anyone who does not yet have their Real ID, is to be aware of official announcements from the State Department and the Department of Transportation and Public Works so that, as soon as operations at the Driver Services (CESCO), take all the necessary steps to get your Real ID. “

Contreras Aponte recalled that through the CESCO Appointments system, citizens can select the date, time and CESCO in which it is best for them to obtain their Real ID.

The Federal Real ID Act was enacted in 2005 by Congress, as a result of an initiative led by DHS, following the terrorist acts against the World Trade Center in New York and other federal facilities, which occurred on September 11, 2001.
