They exhaust medicine in La Laguna believing that it is COVID-19, El Siglo de Torreón

Local and national chain pharmacies in Lerdo and Gómez Palacio have already reported a shortage of the drug ivermectin, after it became viral that consumption allegedly helps treatment against COVID-19.

The head of the Sanitary Jurisdiction 2, Jorge Luis Candelas stresses that the drug does not prevent the virus and that its consumption must be under medical prescription.

In a tour carried out by El Siglo de Torreón in the three cities by local and chain pharmacies, it was also found that the price of said medicine increased by up to 200 percent.

Due to demand and although the drug is not an antibiotic, it is already necessary to present a prescription to obtain it.

As for the price, until a couple of weeks ago you could find a box with two pills at 55 pesos, now the same presentation is at 150 pesos and even more than 300 pesos in other businesses.

Ivermectin is an anthelmintic is a medicine used in the treatment of helminthiasis, that is, infestations with worms, helminths or earthworms. It is also sometimes used to treat some other parasite infections, head or pubic lice infestation, and scabies (a skin condition characterized by itching, caused by small mites that live under the skin).

According to personal agreement with the pharmacies consulted, said medication was requested during pediculosis outbreaks on school campuses. But now due to the information that has circulated on social networks about the supposed benefits in people infected with COVID, their demand grew exponentially.
