He Spanish maritime rescue service on Wednesday located a boat with between 8 and 10 inert bodies 80 miles from the Canary Islands archipelago, located off the coast of North Africa, reported a spokeswoman.
A rescue service plane found the ship adrift while it was involved in the search for another presumably wrecked boat, with about 40 migrants that had departed from Mauritania.
“He was conducting this search and has located a ship where there were between eight and ten inert bodies,” explained the marine rescue spokesperson.
“Right now a Civil Guard patrol is going to the area that will lift the bodies,” he added.
He Canary Islands archipelago, located a hundred kilometers from the coast of Morocco, in 2006 it received more than 30,000 migrants but was progressively disused as a migratory route.
For two years, the measures implemented in the Mediterranean to restrict migratory flows, especially through Libya, have made this route re-emerge.
According to the latest data from the Ministry of the Interior on July 31, 3,136 migrants arrived by sea to the Canaries this year, against 462 in the same period of the previous year.
At the beginning of August, at least 27 migrants died off the coast of Mauritania when their ship, en route to the Canary Islands, “had engine problems,” the United Nations reported.
