The arena shooter Splitgate 2 is struggling to find its footing after its launch. Facing criticism over gameplay and financial choices, the game’s creators are now dealing with layoffs and a drop in player numbers, clouding the future of this contender in the competitive FPS market.

Initial Hype and Subsequent Problems

Splitgate 2, with its portal-based mechanics, aimed to stand out against genre giants such as Call of Duty, Apex Legends, and Fortnite. However, the game is now confronting significant issues that prevent players from fully enjoying its multiplayer and new battle royale mode. The game previously drew attention when its creators criticized Call of Duty for its annual releases, and then faced backlash over a cosmetic pack costing 80 euros.

The CEO of 1047 Games, Ian Proulx, was involved in controversy. He sported a cap emblazoned with “Make FPS Great Again.” He later apologized to the community after the launch of Splitgate 2.

Restructuring and Employee Reductions

The development studio is undergoing difficult times. 1047 Games has dismissed a “small group” of employees, with co-founders Ian Proulx and Nicholas Bagamian temporarily suspending their salaries. This move, announced via LinkedIn, aims to “reorient resources” in an attempt to improve the game following criticism of its gameplay.

Future Uncertainties

Despite facing challenges, the studio asserts its long-term commitment to Splitgate 2. The game has received “varied” reviews on Steam, and only around 5,700 players are actively playing this free-to-play FPS, according to SteamDB data. The developers hope to enhance the user experience based on community feedback. As of late 2023, the arena shooter market is valued at $1.5 billion (Statista), indicating a high level of competition.
