The University of Barcelona, through an investigation, found traces of coronavirus in a sewage sample taken almost a year before the start of the pandemic.
The objective of this research was to prepare some type of plan to avoid possible waves of contagion in the future, showing how the virus behaved with wastewater, which is not suitable for humans but has a direct relationship with people.
And within the studies, SARS-CoV-2 was detected in a sample obtained on March 12, 2019, realizing that the coronavirus was already circulating before it was thought.

“The levels of the SARS-CoV-2 genome clearly coincided with the evolution of COVID-19 cases in the population.“said the coordinator of the work of the UB, Albert Bosch.
At the same time, he added that if the circulation of the virus had been known, it could have helped minimize the effects of this pandemic.
“Having detected the spread of SARS-CoV-2 a month in advance would have allowed a better response to the pandemic,” he added.
It should be remembered that In recent weeks, infections and deaths from COVID-19 have decreased considerably in Spain, but in the same way there are some new outbreaks of concern in different sectors of the country.
