Authorities are looking for a person who apparently fell from a cruise on the Royal Caribbean line in San Juan.
Kiara Hernández, a spokesman for the Department of Public Security, told El Nuevo Día that the information so far is that the incident occurred on pier 3 of the port of San Juan.
Meanwhile, the interim director of the Ports Authority, Joel Pizá Batiz, told this media that as soon as information about the situation was received, the Bureau of Emergency Management and Disaster Management (NMEAD) protocol was activated. He added that they have the help of the Secretary of Public Security, Pedro Janer, and the General Assistant of the National Guard, José Reyes.
“We have divers from the San Juan Municipality division under the direction of Nino Correa, who is with us,” he said. Boats were also activated and there is search by air.
The incident occurred between 8:15 p.m. at 8:30 p.m.
In addition to the search, the authorities verify videos and interview witnesses. Royal Caribbean, meanwhile, is in the process of identifying who the passenger was.
On the other hand, the Coast Guard established a perimeter or “safety zone” of the area. Pizá Batiz said that this means that the three cruise ships that are on the dock will not be able to leave until divers do their job. “Everything is stopped.”
In addition to the ship from which the person fell, the Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Seas, on the pier are the Bliss, of the Norwegian line, and a Viking vessel.
The Oasis of the Seas has a maximum capacity of about 6,000 passengers.
