KOMPAS.com – Badminton from Myanmar Thet Htar Thuzar expressed his pride after facing representatives of Indonesia Gregoria Mariska Tunjung on Sunday (25/7/2021).

How not, the women’s singles Group M match at Musashino Forest Sports Plaza, Tokyo, was her debut at the Olympics.

The 22-year-old badminton player also became Myanmar’s first athlete to compete in the event badminton this four yearly event.

As a result, despite having to lose 21-11 and 21-8, Thet Htar Thuzar still rejoiced.

“I feel very proud to be Myanmar’s first badminton player at the Olympics,” he said as quoted from the official BWF website.

“I just want to say to the people who support me that I will try my best in this Olympics.”

Thet Htar Thuzar also shared the story of his preparations which were far from ideal due to the pandemic conditions.

Finally, the badminton player who immediately became the newest idol of Indonesian netizens is also sure that he can provide more resistance against Gregoria if his preparations are more ideal.

“It’s very difficult to prepare for a match of this magnitude for me,” said the figure who became a star athlete in his homeland.

“I think if I can do better training I can play even better today.”

Thet Htar Thuzar also faced resistance from some Myanmar people after deciding to participate in the Tokyo Olympics.

According to the Asahi Shimbun website, many Myanmar citizens see participation in the Olympics as support for Myanmar’s military junta regime which took power from the civilian government in February.

“I’m no longer proud of you,” wrote one Myanmar resident on social media as quoted from Asahi.com.

Protests against the regime are common in Myanmar, with the military resorting to harsh repression to silence their voices.

A total of 899 people have lost their lives as a result of the military response as of July 10, according to a local humanitarian group report.
