These Two Vaccines Are Effective Against Corona Variant ‘India’

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia The Covid-19 vaccine made by Pfizer and AstraZeneca is believed to offer high protection of more than 90% against patients exposed to the ‘India’ variant of the Delta coronavirus. This appears in a new analysis by Public Health England (PHE) on Monday (14/6/2021).

PHE said the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was 96% effective against inpatients of the Delta variant after two doses. While the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine offers 92% protection against hospitalization by the Delta variant.

PHE said the level of protection was comparable to the Alpha variant, which was first identified in Kent, southeast England. The Delta variant itself was first identified in India.

The analysis adds to evidence that although the Delta variant reduces the vaccine’s effectiveness against symptomatic infection, two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine still protect against severe disease.

“This very important finding confirms that the vaccine offers significant protection against hospitalization from the Delta variant,” said Mary Ramsay, head of immunization at PHE. The Straits Times, Tuesday (15/6).

PHE’s findings follow a study in Scotland showing that two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine among people who tested positive reduced the risk of hospitalization by 70%, although there were not enough hospital admissions reported to compare vaccines.

PHE said that while further work is being done to establish the level of protection against fatalities of the Delta variant, the level of protection against death is expected to be high.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Monday the delay in lifting Covid-19 restrictions in the UK due to the spread of the highly contagious Delta variant, which has also been linked to a higher risk of hospitalization among unvaccinated people.
