These measures have had the most effect on damming coronavirus – Wel.nl

Working from home, schools closed and restaurants closed, governments took numerous measures to stop the coronavirus, but which one had the most effect? Scientists have investigated the consequences of each measure.

The study of the University of East Anglia has been carried out, among other things, to determine which measures should be eased first. To this end, the scientists compared the infection and death rates of the European Center for Disease Control with the dates when measures were introduced in thirty countries.

Their conclusion is that closing schools has been the most meaningful measure. The greatest connection was found with the decrease in the number of infections. That, while it has been said in our country that school closure has very little influence on infection rates.

Banning public gatherings and private gatherings is the second most important measure. This is in line with previous research, Professor Paul Hunter knows. “There are a number of examples of music festivals that we know are respiratory infections that have been widely shared.” Nothing is said about the size of the meetings.

Closing restaurants, sports clubs and fitness centers has also had a significant effect on the spread of the virus. Closing stores and other businesses was less useful.

Strangely enough, staying at home turned out to be ineffective. “This really surprised us,” said researcher Julie Brainard. “It indicates that staying home is not necessary to control the virus outbreak, provided it does not lead to more massive gatherings.”
