Yekaterina Burlieva, a dietitian at the Federal Research Center for Nutrition and Biotechnology, said in an interview with “Rossiyskaya Gazeta”, that eating foods that contain a large amount of vitamins and minerals that strengthen immunity will help fight infection with the Corona virus.

She noted the importance of vitamins A, C, D, E, B2, B6 and B12, in addition to folic acid, zinc, selenium and iron, according to “Sputnik”.

The expert also mentioned that a lack of vitamin D can lead to the risk of respiratory infections. In addition, it supports the production of specific antimicrobial proteins in the epithelium of the respiratory tract – this reduces the likelihood of contracting the virus and developing symptoms of infection.

Cod liver is rich in Vitamin D, as are egg yolks, fish, and butter. A daily intake of 10 to 15 grams of cod liver can “cover the daily requirement for vitamins A and D.”

According to Borlieva, the vitamin E found in nuts and sunflower oil is known to also be effective in protecting the human body from infections, as two tablespoons of it also meet a person’s daily needs for this vitamin. The doctor also noted the importance of vitamin C in modulating immunity: She advised to include it in the diet and it is found in rose hips, sea buckthorn, black currant, cabbage, citrus fruits and paprika. In addition, it is useful to eat beef and chicken liver, as well as cheese and nuts – they contain zinc, which along with selenium are important components of the immune response. Selenium is also found in liver and cottage cheese.

However, it is difficult to “saturate” the body with vitamins and minerals through nutrition alone, so the doctor recommended thinking about taking vitamin compounds. In addition, it urged monitoring of the balance of proteins, fats and carbohydrates.

Burlieva concluded that “optimal nutrition is a major factor in preventing the development and improvement of the course of nutrition-related diseases and in preventing a significant exacerbation of the novel coronavirus infection.”
