These candidates expand the list from 30 to 40

Frankfurt, Düsseldorf Symrise, Qiagen and Zalando: Some companies already have a good chance of being included in the Dax in the coming year. The investment bank Stifel has compiled a list of the most promising candidates from the current perspective for the Handelsblatt.

Corporations that are listed in the Dax automatically migrate to the custody accounts of large investors such as fund companies that map the Dax with their funds. That can boost the stock prices of these companies.

Whether the aircraft manufacturer will be included in the XXL Dax was controversial and heatedly debated. The reason is the proposal to exclude companies that generate more than ten percent of their sales from businesses with controversial weapons.

This is the DAX candidate: The year of the corona epidemic interrupted an upward trend at Airbus that had been ongoing for years. The almost worldwide stop of air traffic and the subsequent delays in deliveries have forced management to reduce capacities and cut staff. In total, the German-French-Spanish-English aircraft and armaments company will eliminate 15,000 jobs.

Management has to show less consideration for the German and French governments than at the time when the states could still exert a dominant influence. Airbus did not make use of any direct state aid.

The share of the commercial aircraft business in sales is normally 80 percent at Airbus, it even contributes almost 90 percent to the result. In the first nine months of 2020, the numbers were of course completely different, the share of sales shrank to only two thirds. The share of sales of helicopters – which are heavily dependent on the oil economy – fluctuates between seven and ten percent, the armaments business contributes a seventh to a fifth, and profitability fluctuates strongly here.

The armaments business is likely to pick up in the next few years: the German government has ordered 38 Eurofighters, and the programs for the euro drone and later for the new combat aircraft system are also gradually ramping up.
