Apple Design Awards 2020

With the Apple Design Awards, Apple has been highlighting apps with a special design for more than twenty years. This does not necessarily mean that they look beautiful, but above all that they make special use of the technical possibilities of Apple equipment. Each of the apps excels through innovation. Notable this year is the large amount of iPad apps. These apps took off with the prizes this time.

Darkroom

Darkroom is an app to edit photos and videos. The app looks beautiful according to Apple and is intuitive to use. Both novice and advanced users can get started. Darkroom uses various features of the iPhone, such as quick actions, contextual menus and haptic feedback.

Looom

Looom is an app with which you can create fun animations: you can create your own hand-drawn stop lotion videos in no time! The app is made specifically for iPad, and according to Apple, gets the most out of dark mode and the Apple Pencil.

shapr3d

The app will ship its LiDAR scanner later this year iPad Pro 2020 support: allows an accurate floor plan and 3D drawing of a room to be made. AR allows you to see the designs ‘in real life’.

StaffPad

StaffPad is an app for musicians. The app uses handwriting recognition and converts handwritten musical notes into sheet music. This app is also specially for the iPad. Apple believes that StaffPad makes excellent use of the Apple Pencil and an Apple technology like Drag & Drop.

Games

In addition to the four apps mentioned above, four games were also awarded. Some of them, and no surprise, can be played exclusively through Apple’s own gaming service Apple Arcade.

  • Sayonara Wild Hearts is called by Apple a ‘Partly a music clip from the 80s, partly a classic arcade game’.
  • In the beautifully drawn Sky: Children of the Light, players must team up to bring light to the world. Solve many puzzles and find secrets!
  • Song of Bloom is a puzzle game. But certainly not of the type thirteen in a dozen! The app is a bit artistic.
  • You build house of cards in the adventure game Where Cards Fall. They symbolize life-defining memories.
