These are the best degrees to find work | Money

Getting a degree pays off. This is evident from the most recent School-leavers Report of the VDAB. Of all graduates with a higher education diploma, only 2 percent are registered as jobseekers after 1 year. This is 8 percent for graduates with a secondary education diploma. But of the young people who left school in 2020 without a diploma, almost a quarter are still looking for work one year later (23 percent).

STEM and healthcare are the top performers when it comes to diplomas with a high chance of a job. After 1 year, 7 percent of STEM graduates are looking for a job with a secondary education diploma and 3 percent after higher education. For young people with a diploma in care this is 7 and 1 percent respectively.

BSO

Arborist, woodcutter, horticulturist, employee in forestry or fruit cultivation: if you have green fingers, the chance of a job is very high. After 1 year, not a single graduate in horticulture and landscaping is registered as a jobseeker. Would you also like to work in horticulture? These vacancies are open.

Graduate truck drivers After 1 year almost all drive around with a ten-ton truck. Trucker is therefore a classic bottleneck profession. In this job you start with an average salary of 1,772 euros net (1,996 euros gross).

With the diploma home and elderly care you become health care professional. You can work in care institutions, but also in people’s homes, for example as a domestic help. Count on an average starting salary of 1,664 euros net (1,815 euros gross).

Do you want to tinker with cars and vans, or with agricultural, construction and lifting machines? With a diploma in applied automotive technology, no graduate is registered as a job seeker after 1 year. You start working on an average salary of 1,717 euros net (1,955 euros gross). Is wood your thing, but would you rather work in a coordinating and managerial position than as a woodworker? That is precisely the objective of the direction of wood technology. After 1 year, not a single graduate is still registered as a jobseeker and earns an average of 1,757 euros net (2,125 euros gross).

Sometimes figures say it all: at the end of May, VDAB recorded 515 job seekers for 2,385 open vacancies for a nurse. Not to mention that your job prospects with this degree are sky-high. Your salary as a starter? On average 1,783 euros net (2,227 euros gross).

Speech therapists in audiologists can be found in special education, care institutions, hospitals, care for the elderly, health insurance companies and Kind en Gezin. A growing number of them are also starting to work as self-employed, whether or not part-time. The average wage of a starter is 1,962 euros net (2,928 euros gross).

Master

With a degree in industrial sciences: construction engineering, you graduate as an industrial engineer in construction. Your work area consists of buildings and infrastructure works. The diploma in engineering: mechanical engineering is that of a mechanical engineer. This opens the way to numerous sectors, from chemistry and mechanical engineering to consultancy firms. IT professions have been a regular customer in VDAB’s list of shortage occupations for years. Informatics therefore remains a good choice with a view to job security. On average you will receive a salary of 2,031 euros net (3,092 euros gross).
