“To honor the more than 25.6 million people who fell ill and the more than 850,000 who died from COVID-19, we have no time to lose,” said Sirleaf.
The panel will organize a monthly mission briefing, providing updates on progress.
It will also present an interim report at the next meeting of the World Health Assembly in November. Its full report will be known at the May 2021 meeting.
The COVID-19 pandemic has already claimed at least 863,679 deaths and infected more than 26 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.
In Portugal, 1,829 people out of 59,051 confirmed to have died, according to the most recent bulletin from the Directorate-General for Health.
The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December in Wuhan, a city in central China.
