Once in a while, a list of WHO, a major university or research institute with the greatest threats to the survival of humanity appears. In addition to nuclear weapons and climate change, a pandemic is standard in the top 10. But yes, such a list is more reading material than we take it very seriously.
With today’s knowledge, we may have to change that. A report was released this week, entitled Surviving and Thriving in the 21st Century. It comes from the Commission for the Human Future, which consists of a group of Australian scientists. They formulated a top 10 of the biggest threats to Earth. It looks like we still have a lot to expect.
The top 10:
- Decrease in natural resources, especially water
- Ecosystem collapse and loss of biodiversity
- Growth of the world population beyond the capacity of the Earth
- Global warming and human-induced climate change
- Chemical pollution of the earth, especially the atmosphere and the oceans
- Increasing food shortages and poor food quality
- Nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction
- Pandemics of new and untreatable diseases
- Powerful new technology that we cannot control
- National and worldwide failures to understand these risks and act preventively
The latter in particular must be firmly in our ears.
