These are Austria’s most popular mountains on the internet

An analysis of hashtag presence on Instagram reveals which local mountains are most popular on the social media platform. The Dachstein, the Arlberg and the Großglockner land on the podium. Tell us your favorite Austrian mountain at the end of the post!

AUSTRIA. The Dachstein is by far the most popular Austrian-Alpine photo motif. As of July 27, 2022, around 217,000 postings were dedicated to the hiking and skiing area. This was the result of an analysis by APA-Comm, for which more than 2,000 Austrian mountains and their hashtag presence on Instagram were evaluated. The strongest increases compared to the last evaluation from 2019 are recorded by mountain ranges in the outskirts of Vienna.

The “Stairs to Nowhere”

The easy ascent by gondola and unique views make the Dachstein, located between Hallstatt and Schladming, Austria’s most popular mountain motif on Instagram. In addition to photos of an ice cave, impressive mountain formations, refreshing lake landscapes and climbing and hiking impressions, images of the “Sky Walk” viewing platform in particular stand out – the attraction known as “Stairs to Nowhere” attracts snapshots like a magnet.

Arlberg in second place

The Arlberg once again took second place in the ranking. The mountain between Tyrol and Vorarlberg, which is primarily known for winter sports, combines a total of more than 150,000 entries. Above all, guests from the internationally renowned tourist resorts of Lech, Zürs and St. Anton am Arlberg ensure a high hashtag presence. Pictures of alpine landscapes with green meadows or culinary delicacies round off the appearance on Instagram.

3.000er in den Top-Five

With the Großglockner (141,845 entries) and the Kitzsteinhorn (127,466 entries), the two 3,000 m peaks take third and fourth place among the top 10 mountains in Austria. The Großglockner is not only the highest mountain in the country, but also has the highest paved pass road in Austria with the Großglockner High Alpine Road and thus offers a variety of impressions, especially for motorized photographers.

The Grossglockner, Austria's highest mountain, comes third in the ranking.

In the course of the hashtag analysis for the Kitzsteinhorn, images with a view of Zell am See and the Hohe Tauern as well as the impressive power plants of Kaprun dominate. As in 2019, the Hochkönig in Salzburg took fifth place with 79,129 entries. Its characteristically rugged shape has a high recognition value and appears to be particularly “instagrammable” in the photo-savvy community.

Growth for Viennese local mountains

The strongest increases in the twenty most popular mountains in the ranking are recorded by mountain ranges in the outskirts of Vienna. Compared to 2019, Schneeberg (6th place) in Lower Austria almost doubled its presence on the social media platform with an increase of 99 percent. The same applies to the Hohe Wand near Wiener Neustadt (14th place), which has 90 percent more entries than in the APA-Comm analysis from 2019.
