The two types of cholesterol are low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, which doctors consider the “bad” cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, which is the beneficial “good” cholesterol.

Lipoproteins carry cholesterol throughout the body via the bloodstream. As a result, LDL cholesterol can build up in the blood vessels, oxidize, and form harmful plaques in the arteries.

The lipoproteins that make up HDL cholesterol carry cholesterol back to the liver, which then processes it and stops it from building up in the arteries.
