There’s a Burning Battery in the Cabin, the Plane Makes an Emergency Landing

Jakarta

The Spirit Airlines flight had to be diverted from its destination because there was smoke rising from the cabin. It is suspected that the fire started from the battery.

Spirit Airlines airline crew said that there was a burnt battery in the aircraft cabin. As a result the Spirit Airlines Flight diverted and landed safely in Jacksonville, Florida, on Wednesday.

Reported from CNN, Friday (3/3/2023) The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is currently investigating the incident. Initially, this Airbus A320 aircraft departed from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport to Orlando International Airport.

“Spirit Airlines Flight 259 landed safely at Jacksonville International Airport at approximately 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 1 after the crew reported a battery burn in overhead storage,” an FAA spokesperson said.

The fire was successfully extinguished in flight.

“The aircraft landed at JAX and taxied into the terminal without incident. We thank our crew and guests for their swift action to ensure the safety of everyone on board, and we thank the first responders on board,” he added.

One of the passengers on this plane also told the chronology of the fire on the plane. Joseph Fleck also recorded and shared it on Twitter.

“Someone shouted ‘fire’ and I looked up and saw the cabin was filling with smoke very quickly,” said Fleck.

“Some passengers jumped to open the cabin and saw there was a backpack on fire because the battery was charging the phone. It basically exploded,” he said.

Fleck recorded a video showing firefighters boarding the plane and inspecting the cabin. He also shared a picture of the smoke-filled cabin.

“The smell was so strong it made it very difficult to breathe. I was coughing a lot for the next two hours.” he said.

Fleck, who was flying with his family, said they were going on vacation to Disneyland in Orlando. However, Spirit Airlines does not have additional aircraft to carry passengers back. They also took an Uber at a cost of USD 250.
