There is no Evidence of Communicating through Food

Jakarta

China has again found traces corona virus in frozen food or frozen food that worries many people. However, the executive director of the World Health Organization (WHO) emergency program, Dr.Mike Ryan, said there was no evidence that the Corona virus was transmitted through food to date.

“But at this time there is no evidence that food is involved in the transmission of the Corona virus,” said Dr. Mike Ryan in a press release at the WHO Geneva office, quoted by CNBC International, Thursday (14/8/2020).

“People should not be afraid of food or food packaging, or food processing and delivery. Food is very important,” he added.

“And I don’t like to think that we are going to create the impression there is a problem with our diet. We are under enough pressure (in the face of a pandemic),” he explained.

Not only WHO, researchers at China even until now they are still studying the problem. Even international agencies are tracking their findings.

NBC News reported, previously three cities in China reported finding traces of the virus on the surface of imported frozen food for four days. This raises concerns that the virus could be transmitted through food and cause new outbreaks.

In proving this, WHO officials said Chinese health authorities had tested at least hundreds of thousands of frozen food samples and found ‘very few’ traces of the Corona virus. They also said they had issued guidelines from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization relating to handling food safely.

“Even if the virus does spread through food for which evidence is not shown, it is killed before we eat it,” said WHO head of diseases and zoonoses unit Maria Van Kerkhove.

“If the virus is actually in food, and we don’t have an example where the virus is transmitted as foodborne, even though someone has consumed food products, the virus can be killed like other viruses, it can be killed when the meat is cooked,” he added.

“People are scared enough, afraid enough of the pandemic COVID-19,” tegas Ryan.

WHO said the findings are very important to be studied more deeply. To prove its truth, scientific evidence is needed and WHO will not ignore these findings.

“It is important for us to trace findings like this, and it is important for us not to ignore the scientific evidence where we find them. But, it is also important for people to live their daily lives without fear,” said Ryan.
