There is a number ‘2’ and the letter ‘L’ on the transmission lever of an automatic car, what do they mean?

Jakarta

In contrast to the manual car transmission lever which is dominated by numbers, automatic cars often contain several letters. Maybe some of you are familiar and know about its functions, including P, R, N, and D. P means Parking, R means Reverse, N is Neutral, and D is Drive.

Citing the Suzuki Indonesia page as the name implies, the P lever is activated when the car is in a parked position. This is intended so that the transmission is in a locked position so that the car does not move. While R is used when you want to reverse the car.

N means the gear is in the Neutral position. When the shift lever is in the N position, the engine and transmission are not connected. Then there is D alias Drive which means road. When the position of the automatic car transmission lever is on D, the car automatically moves forward.

The gear shift from low to high will also be adjusted automatically when the transmission lever is in position D. You only need to step on the gas and brake pedals according to road conditions.

For some cars there are also numbers 2 and L. Number 2 means the gear position is stuck at 2. You can position the transmission lever to number 2 when you are on a steep or long downhill road for the engine brake. Then when facing a steep incline, you can also move the transmission lever to position 2.

While for L alias Low, it means that the highest gear position is held in gear 1. In some automatic cars, this L is also written with the number 1. Just like number 2, L can also be used when the driver crosses the road downhill or uphill.

Why not just use D when you can adjust the position of the teeth? When in position D and the position of the road uphill, sometimes the car will feel heavy.

If you pay attention, in automatic cars there is also a ‘Shift Lock’ around the transmission lever. Shift Lock serves to release the transmission lever lock so that it can be moved to the N position. This is useful when you have to park the car in parallel. That way, the car can be easily pushed back and forth.
