There is a link between the coronavirus pandemic and the increase in the number of admissions of children affected by Kawasaki disease. The latter increased by nearly 500% during the pandemic period, according to a study conducted by the general pediatrics department at Robert Debré hospital in Paris.
Kawasaki disease, or Kawasaki syndrome, is an inflammatory disease that mainly affects children between the ages of 1 and 8. It can cause serious heart damage and even death.

The cases have soared by + 497%… but the severe forms remain “very rare”
From 2005 to 2020, 230 patients with Kawasaki disease were hospitalized. But in April 2020, two weeks after the peak of the coronavirus epidemic, the number of child admissions for Kawasaki disease increased by 497%. The form of development of this disease with the coronavirus is more serious.
