There Are Side Effects, Sweden Delays Moderna Vaccine for Teens

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Sweden will temporarily stop the use of the Covid-19 vaccine Modern for teenagers and children. This discontinuation was made after reports of possible side effects from using the vaccine, one of which was myocarditis.

This information was delivered by the Swedish Health Agency, Wednesday (6/10).

The health agency said data showed an increase in myocarditis and pericarditis among vaccinated adolescents and young adults.

“The relationship is very clear when it comes to the Spikevax Moderna vaccine, especially after the second dose,” the Swedish Health Agency said in Reuters.

Even so, they add that the risk of contracting both diseases is very small.

According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), myocarditis is inflammation of the heart muscle, while pericarditis is inflammation of the outer layer of the heart.

In both cases, the immune system causes inflammation in response to infection or other triggers.

The health agency also said heart symptoms “usually go away on their own”, but should still be seen by a doctor.

Sweden’s Chief Epidemiologist Anders Tegnell, said they were “following the situation closely and acting quickly to ensure that vaccination against COVID-19 is always as safe as possible and at the same time provides effective protection” against the disease.

The occurrence of heart inflammation is evident from data collected in the Nordic states. In the data, it was conveyed that there was a suspicion of an increased risk of heart inflammation in young people, especially men, who were vaccinated with Moderna.

Even so, the number of cases of heart inflammation is still very low.

The study was conducted by Denmark’s Statens Serum Institute, the Medical Products Agency in Sweden, the National Institute of Public Health in Norway, and the Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) in Finland. Reportedly, the final results of the study will be announced within a month.

The Swedish government itself is now recommending Pfizer/Biontech’s Comirnaty vaccine instead.

People born in 1991 or later who have received their first Moderna injection, about 81,000 people, will not get a second Moderna injection.

Earlier this week, the Swedish Health Agency said people aged 12 to 15 would only get the Pfizer/Biontech vaccine.

Previously, the European Medicines Agency approved use of Comirnaty in May, while Spikevax was approved for children over 12 years of age in July.

To date, the number of Covid-19 cases in Sweden has reached 1,156,248. The death toll from this virus reached 14,848, reported Worldometers.
