Their toughest electric car so far

Earlier this year, Mercedes opened for orders for the brand new EQE – the little brother of the electric luxury sedan EQS.

Now it gradually begins to roll some copies of the newcomer on Norwegian roads.

Initially, there is only one version available for order in Norway: AMG EQE 43 4Matic, which is the preliminary top model.

As always, when Mercedes’ AMG logo adorns the left side of the tailgate, it raises expectations. This is the model that will deliver hefty performance, raw driving characteristics and a design that makes passers-by glare a little extra.

Right now we are testing one of the first cars on Norwegian signs – and there is no doubt: The new EQE 43 4Matic is Mercedes’ toughest electric car, so far.

Now the E-Class becomes electric

Compared to EQS, we think the lines and proportions look a bit better on this one. The starting price is 909,800 kroner.

476 horsepower

In many ways, we also get confirmed out on the road. Although the test car’s appearance is quite discreet, with Graphite Gray paint, it still oozes something extra.

20-inch AMG rims, a small rear spoiler and a petty grille with 14 vertical grooves hint that this is not an ordinary electric car from Mercedes.

The Mercedes-AMG EQE 43 4MATIC has two electric motors and a fully variable four-wheel drive system. This means that the car constantly sends the forces where they are needed most. Total power is 476 horsepower and solid 858 Nm.

The battery pack has a net capacity of 90.6 kWt. In Sport and Sport + driving modes, the focus is on performance, while in comfort mode, the focus is on range. The stated range is 530 kilometers, while our test car will cover up to 518 kilometers.

Test Mercedes EQS: – This is the most important car of the decade

If we are to describe this interior in two words: Modern luxury.

Eats swings

Behind the wheel, there is no doubt that AMG has done its part to ensure that the car is as happy to drive as it is.

In Sport +, the car is lowered and the chassis is significantly tightened. EQE 43 4Matic eats its way through winding country roads in a playful way. The rear-wheel steering, up to 3.6 degrees, makes it extra agile through the sharpest turns.

If you really push the car hard, you will naturally notice the weight. The car is really no lightweight with its just over 2.5 tons. This even the AMG engineers can not completely conjure away.

The space in the back seat is good and you sit well. The luggage compartment is 430 liters, while you can tow a trailer of up to 750 kg. It's not particularly impressive in this class.

Lovely luxury

Unlike its fossil relative, the E 53 or E 63, the EQE 43 feels more comfortable when you drive it in comfort mode.

The car can be fast charged with up to 170 kW. It is a long way from the best in class, if we look at pure 'top effect'.

Here, the adaptive and electronically adjustable dampers do a fantastic job. Comfort is also underpinned by a delicate and luxurious interior. This is really accomplished, especially with the giant screen in the middle that Mercedes calls “Hyperscreen”.

But beware: If you choose this, it will cost you 75,600 kroner. Also, the availability of Hyperscreen is not as good at the moment, due to the famous chip shortage …

This car is on the verge of madness

If you come from a petrol-powered AMG model, you will not experience this as equally naughty. Here, of course, you do not get hard gear changes or potholes.

More to come

With its 476 hp, the new EQE 43 4Matic delivers a solid power package.

The push is enough that you should contact a chiropractor, specializing in neck slings, if you are not prepared. At the same time, it is not as explosive as the Porsche Taycan Turbo S or the worst from Tesla.

It should be said that EQE will come in an even heavier AMG version eventually. Then it’s called EQE 53 4Matic. It delivers 687 hp and kicks 0-100 km / h in just 3.3 seconds.

We still guess most people will manage with the 43 version, which in our eyes is the toughest electric car for Mercedes, so far.

Broom will return with a full test of the car later.
