Theft and homicide in Colombia increased after the national quarantine – Other Cities – Colombia

After a historical fall in April, due to the quarantine, Medellín, Barranquilla, Cartagena, Bucaramanga and Cali report an increase in crime.

Cali seeks to stop homicides

After a month of significant reduction, homicides in Cali rebounded since May.

According to the municipality’s Secretary of Security, in May there were 87 homicides, of which 17 occurred only on the weekend of the 25th holiday bridge, one of the ends most violent week of the year in this capital. Despite these figures, in May there was a reduction of 12 homicides compared to the same month of 2019.

And so far in June there are 81 homicides, and there is still this festive bridge. These figures are already higher than those that occurred in the same month last year, when, according to the city’s Security Secretariat, there were 64 cases.

“There is no doubt that we must direct actions against structural violence in some critical communes and sectors that we have already identified,” said the city’s Security Secretary, Carlos Alberto Rojas Cruz.

Fight in Barranquilla

From March 1 to June 25 of this year, in Barranquilla there have been 130 homicides. Of these, 108 have been committed during the three months of quarantine.

According to the authorities, in this first quarter there was a decrease of 2 percent compared to the same period in 2019, when 110 homicides were reported. Many of these violent deaths, says the Police, correspond to cases of intolerance and are generated by fights that occur in the neighborhoods or inside the houses.

According to figures reported by the Unified Information System (SIU) of the Office for Citizen Security and Coexistence, the theft in Barranquilla registered a decrease of 31 percent, represented in 2,269 cases less than in the same period of 2019 (from 25 March to June 23). In the case of theft against people, the reduction was 55 percent; in residences, 42 percent; in shops, 71 percent, and in vehicles, 76 percent.

In Medellín robberies worry, but homicides go down

The robberies have the authorities in Medellín on alert. Last Thursday two cases occurred that ended in the capture of four adults and the arrest of a younger. Although there are no consolidated figures for the month of June, data from the Statistical, Criminal Violence and Operational Information System of the National Police (Siedco) indicate that in April there were 535 complaints of theft against people and in May the number increased to 927. The Ministry of Security of Medellín states that the total balance for the year is still lower compared to that of 2019. With a cut in mid-June, the theft of people decreased by 29 percent, from 11,252 cases last year to 8,023 this year. year.

Regarding homicides, the Information System for Safety and Coexistence (Sisc) revealed that while March and April were the months with the lowest number of homicides since the city is registered (with 24 and 21 cases, respectively), in May the figure increased to 42 violent deaths. However, in the first 25 days of June the trend has been downward, since 18 murders have been reported.

Cartagena, facing thefts

“I was a victim of the insecurity that Cartagena is currently experiencing. In the morning hours, at a Transcaribe bus stop, I was robbed, ”the announcer Jacinto de Jesús Palafor, better known as JJ Palafor, denounced on Thursday. Theft returns to Cartagena worry, although on average, between January and June, there is a decrease of 31 percent compared to the same period last year.

Until the 20th of that month, the city’s Metropolitan Police had reported 1,726 thefts to people.

The homicide figures in Cartagena, with a cut of June 13, are also worrying.

According to the weekly homicide trend presented by the Cartagena Metropolitan Police, in the first 13 days of June there were 10 cases, while in the same period last year, five had been registered. In the year, the month with the most homicides was April, with 22 cases.

Bucaramanga, on alert

Since the economic reactivation began in Bucaramanga, starting on June 1, the authorities have also observed an increase in the delinquency. While 10 homicides were reported in May, 12 were registered during 25 days of June.

Regarding the theft of people, there was also an increase. In May, 214 cases were registered and with a cut last Friday, there were already 241.

The same happens with shoplifting, which to date has already increased by 3 cases. While 50 cases were registered in May, in June there are already 53.

On the contrary, it happens with the theft in residences: in May there were 30 cases, and so far this month there have been 22. According to figures from the Metropolitan Police of Bucaramanga (Mebuc), before the start of compulsory isolation there were 56 daily crimes, and during quarantine 30 daily crimes are registered, averaging the last three months.
