The Züri-Sack should cost 25 percent less in the future. The trigger for this is that ERZ has amassed an impressive 255 million francs in reserves for disposal and recycling. This money is now to be partially returned to the population by lowering the fees.

At the end of 2020, the waste disposal division of Waste Management + Recycling Zurich (ERZ) had accumulated reserves amounting to an impressive 255 million francs. The city had been working towards dismantling this cushion since 2017, but to no avail. The reserves even increased by 30 million francs during this time.

Now the city council has decided to return part of these 255 million to the population through fee reductions. To this end, he asked the local council to adjust the waste ordinance accordingly, as he announced on Wednesday.

The fee for a 35-liter sack drops to 1.27 francs

Specifically, the frequently used 35-liter sack will cost just 1.27 francs in the future, not 1.70 as it is today. In addition, there is the surcharge from the retailer who sells the sacks.

The fees for the disposal of recyclable containers and bulky goods are to be permanently reduced by 25 percent. In addition, the basic fees for residential units and businesses are to be reduced for four years.

The communities that bring their waste to Hagenholz should also benefit: From 2024, the so-called posting fee is to be reduced to 82 francs per ton of waste.

A part of the accumulated money is also to be used for three planned major projects: 100 million Swiss francs are to be put as pre-financing in a third incineration line in Hagenholz, another 120 million are earmarked for the replacement of two existing incineration lines.

Goal: Only 20 million reserves left

With the fee reductions and the 220 million francs for the Hagenholz projects, the city council wants to reduce the waste reserve to 20 million francs. This target is expected to be achieved in 2029. However, the prerequisite is that the new Waste Ordinance can come into force in January 2022.
