American writer Alice Siebold has publicly apologized to Anthony Broadwater, who spent 16 years in prison on false charges of her rape.

The story of the rape of Siebold is described in detail in her autobiographical novel “Happy” in 1999, which became commercially successful and influenced the further career of the writer. BBC News.

The very same attack on Siebold happened in 1981, when she was an 18-year-old student. She later reported to the police that she had met a black man on the street who she believed had attacked her. Anthony Broadwater was soon detained by the police.

During police identification, Siebold pointed to another person, but later identified Broadwater in court. In 1982 he was sentenced and spent 16 years in prison. He always insisted on his innocence.

But in 2021, producer Timothy Mucciante, who was working on the film adaptation of Happy, drew attention to the discrepancy between the book and the film script. He hired a private investigator to check the evidence of the convict’s guilt. As a result, it turned out that there was a miscarriage of justice, and the Broadwater case was sent for review, and on November 22, 2021, he was acquitted.

After that, Siebold stated that in 1982 she was trying to achieve justice, and not break the life of another person.

“What I regret most is that the life you could have lived was unfairly taken from you. And I know that no amount of apology can change what happened to you,” she said.

Siebold said that since Broadwater was acquitted, she has been trying to figure out everything that happened, and the real rapist will never be found.

Anthony Broadwater himself, through his lawyers, said that he accepts Alice Siebold’s apology.

As UNIAN reported earlier, at least seven men were arrested in western India after the 16-year-old homeless girl reported hundreds of rape cases by hundreds of men.
