The World’s Oldest Civilization and the Lost Continent of Kumari Kandam

Hindi Gita Press Mahabharata

The Bhagavata Purana (500 BC — 1000 AD) tells the story of Manu/Satyavrata, the Dravidian ruler who survived a flood after building a boat guided by God (similar to the story of Noah and his ark). However, this book does not refer to a specific location or community.

Nationalgeographic.co.id—Many people certainly already know the story of the legendary island called Atlantis, which was told by Plato. In his book entitled Timaeus and Critias, Atlantis is said to be a rich island, but sank just like that in a day and night.

Far to the east, a similar story occurs in India. This time the name was the ‘lost continent’ of Lemuria. This region is often associated with the legend of Kumari Kandam by Tamil speakers.

The term Lemuria dates back to the late 19th century. British geologist Philip Sclater is baffled by the presence of lemur fossils in Madagascar and India, but not in mainland Africa and the Middle East.

“Madagascar day India was once part of a larger continent,” said Sclater, in his 1864 article entitled Madagascar Mammals. Sclater named this lost land as ‘Lemuria’.
