The World’s 10 Highest-Paid Athletes in 2023 According to Forbes

Professional sports are competition, championships, and cash.

Forbes released its list of the 10 highest-paid athletes for 2023. The group earned more than $1.1 billion combined and includes three soccer stars, three basketball players, two golfers, a boxer and a now-retired tennis player.

Here’s a look at the biggest paydays for athletes on and off the field over the past year:

THE LIST OF THE 10 HIGHEST PAID ATHLETES IN THE WORLD IN 2023

CRISTIANO RONALDO: 136 MILLONES

Cristiano Ronaldo’s ugly departure from Manchester United ended up helping his bank account. The Portuguese superstar left Europe to sign with Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr and now has an estimated annual salary of $75 million. Her appeal to brands off the field is also evident, as she has more followers combined on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter than any other athlete in the world.

LIONEL MESSI – $130 MILLION

Lionel Messi’s future at PSG is over, but after his first World Cup title of his career, the Argentine legend is still raking in the money. About half of his money came from PSG, while endorsements from Adidas, Budweiser, PepsiCo, Partners and more effectively doubled his earnings.

Next in the chapter for the 35-year-old player is MLS, which he announced would be his next destination. No concrete details about his potential salary are known yet due to MLS financial rules, so it will be interesting to see how much the club pays him along with possible endorsement deals.

KYLIAN MBAPPE – $120 MILLION

Kylian Mbappé is the youngest player in the Forbes top 10 at just 24 years old. With a World Cup title under his belt and another World Cup final appearance in 2022, the PSG phenom has already become one of the most recognizable athletes in the world. Most of his earnings come from his huge salary with the French club.

LEBRON JAMES – $119.5 MILLION

LeBron James is the highest-earning American athlete on the Forbes list. In addition to becoming the NBA’s all-time leading scorer this year, James also became the first active athlete to become a Forbes-certified billionaire last June. In addition to his Lakers salary, James has a lifetime contract with Nike and has a stake in Fenway Sports Group, owner of the Boston Red Sox, Liverpool FC and Pittsburgh Penguins.

CANELO ALVAREZ – $110 MILLION

Canelo Álvarez made a lot of money from his fights against Dmitry Bivol and Gennadiy Golovkin. He makes the vast majority of his money in the ring compared to endorsements from him, and it will add to his total during his fight against John Ryder on May 6.

The first celebrity on the list earned $590 million. Find out who she is.

DUSTIN JOHNSON – $107 MILLLONES

Like Ronaldo, Johnson was one of two golfers to earn nine-figure paydays in the last 12 months after moving to a Saudi-funded organization. Dustin Johnson joined LIV Golf in 2022 for a staggering signing fee and ended up winning $35.6 million in in-game prize money in less than 10 tournaments on the rouge tour.

PHIL MICKELSON – $106 MILLION

Just behind Johnson is Phil Mickelson, who relies on on-field results for profit after losing sponsors with his move to LIV. The new golf league gave Mickelson a $200 million stadium contract to join last year. The 52-year-old lefty returned to hallowed ground, earning $1.6 million in a tie for second place at the 2023 Masters.

STEPH CURRY – $100.4 MILLONES

Steph Curry is the eighth and last athlete to cross the $100 million threshold in the past year. He won his fourth NBA Finals with the Golden State Warriors last June and had the league’s highest salary in 2022-23 at $48.1 million. Off the court, Curry was embroiled in a lawsuit after the collapse of FTX, but he has a lucrative deal with Under Armor and is expanding his media ventures with his company, Unanimous Media, to make up for that loss.

ROGER FEDERER – $95.1 MILLION

Roger Federer called it a race last September, but his sponsors stick around. The Swiss tennis icon has more than a dozen long-term partners who have helped him earn $95 million off the court in the past year, according to Forbes.

KEVIN DURANT – $89.1 MILLION

It’s been a hectic 12 months for Kevin Durant, but he’s been paid at every stop. The former Brooklyn Net was traded to the Phoenix Suns in February, but his salary of more than $40 million went with him. He’s also making moves off the court, landing a lifetime contract with Nike, growing his media company Boardroom and buying stakes in companies through his investment firm 35V.
